| We offer two degrees: BS, or Bachelor of Science,
and BA, Bachelor of Arts. The BS requires 131 credit hours while
the BA requires 125 credit hours. Both degrees have the same
Computer Science course sequence, but differ in supporting
courses.
The BS degree is most appropriate for those going on to
graduate school in Computer Science or engineering. Since it
requires more mathematics and laboratory based science, the BS
degree firmly grounds students in the scientific method and data
acquisition and analysis skills.
The B.A. degree permits the student to combine study of
Computer Science with some other field by getting an official
minor in another academic program.
There is not a significant difference between B.S. and B.A.
holders in the job market, and virtually every job that is
available to one graduate is available to the other. If the
graduate were more interested in hardware, however, then he/she
would likely attempt to earn the B.S. degree, since it requires
physics and electronics.
All computer science majors must take these two mathematics courses:
MAT 111 -- Calculus I
MAT 191 -- Introduction to Discrete Mathematics
In addition, BS majors take
MAT 112 -- Calculus II
MAT 141 -- Inferential Statistics
If you wish to avoid math courses altogether, you might consider working
towards the Certificate in Computer Science. You would have to
major in another area, however.
Remember that both degrees (both B.S. and B.A.) have the
Computer Science core courses. |
